"A MAGISTRATE has adjourned to consider his verdict in the case of a man charged with killing a dog in Inverell.
David August Pischke is charged with torturing or beating an animal causing its death and committing an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, but he is fighting the offences.
The 45-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the charges and appeared in Inverell Local Court for a hearing last week where a brief of evidence was handed to Magistrate Michael O'Brien.
No witnesses were called during the hearing before it was adjourned for Mr O'Brien to consider the evidence and determine his verdicts on both charges. The charges centre on an alleged incident at Pischke's property in Inverell when he located a dog about 7am on October 4, last year.
Police allege Pischke used a shovel and a hammer to strike the American Bulldog multiple times to the head.
The dog died at the scene.
Police were notified of the incident and launched an investigation before the owner of the animal was identified and contacted. Following investigations, Pischke was questioned by police before he was issued with a court attendance notice in October to answer the two charges in court.
Mr O'Brien will hand down his verdict in July."
