CULL OF KANGAROOS KILLS 24 IN FIRST NIGHT - CODE FOR HUMANE KILLING IGNORED

This story is shared from the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network facebook page.

Not only did DELWP start the Lancefield-Cobaw fire that burnt so many animals in October 2015, but they then issued a cull permit for Kangaroos on the property next to the shelter where injured Kangaroos from that fire were taken.

Now, despite a public media outcry, the shooting has started, with at least 24 dead in the first night.

But that's not the end of it. Under the Australian Government's National Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and Wallabies (non-commercial purposes), it indicates that:

"A shooter using a rifle must aim so as to hit the target Kangaroo or wallaby in the brain."

"A shooter must not aim so as to hit the target kangaroo or wallaby in any other part of the body..."

The Code further goes to describe that a heart shot is only acceptable on injured animals.

None of the 24 shots were head shots. Rather, they were all body shots. These kangaroos suffered as did the Joeys who were left for dead and did die overnight.

It doesn't end there. Despite being shown evidence of this breach of the code of practice for ALL Kangaroos shot on the first night.... DELWP is allowing the cull (slaughter) to continue during the course of their investigations.

How is this acceptable?

UPDATE......

DELWP have acted! The shooter has had his permit suspended. Whilst this is great news we still have a long road ahead. We are urging DELWP to prosecute for aggravated animal cruelty and ensure this suspension becomes permanent.
THANK YOU to each & everyone of our followers for supporting Pastoria Wildlife Shelter in this terrible time.
You guys helped make this happen and saved many kangaroos from a cruel death. Thank you

DELWP Loddon Mallee
Permit for Kangaroo control suspended
DELWP has suspended an Authority to Control Wildlife (ATCW) permit granted to a Pastoria East landholder.
Following an inspection by DELWP Wildlife officers last night at the property the authorisation was suspended pending a further investigation into an alleged breach of permit conditions.
The visit to the property by Wildlife Officers was prompted by a report from the community about the way that kangaroos were shot at the property.
The suspension of the ATCW is under section 28D of the Wildlife Act.

Thank you all for your support please keep sharing our petition2 and put pressure on the government to resist issuing such permits.....
