Fort Smith, AR - Logan County sheriff Dan Boyd Hicks announced via Facebook on Thursday afternoon that a county man has been arrested on felony aggravated cruelty to animal charges after an investigation into a video that was posted on the social media platform earlier in the month.

“At approximately 6:43 p.m. today I received two recordings of voice messages that I recognized to be Larry Wesley Furr that established enough probable cause to make an arrest,” said Hicks. “At 7:42 p.m. Furr was arrested and the dog was seized and taken to an animal shelter.”

Furr was being held pending a bond hearing and filing of formal charges by the prosecuting attorney’s office.
Hicks said that on June 13 Furr called the sheriff’s office to request that a deputy be sent to his residence to check the welfare of his dog “Bear.”

Furr stated that someone had posted a video of his dog allegedly being hung and he reported at that time that the dog jumped out of a parked boat with a chain on and got caught and hung for a few seconds until he untangled him and got him down.

Furr stated that he wasn’t aware that he was video taping when this happened and stated that he was using his cell phone flash light to get the dog untangled.

Furr farther stated that he was getting death threats on Facebook because of the video and he wanted law enforcement to know that the dog was okay and and the incident was an accident.

A deputy was immediately dispatched to the Furr residence and the welfare of the dog was checked. The dog was up and walking around and appeared to be fine and was checked again later in the week by law enforcement and appeared to be fine.

The investigation showed that the woman who posted the video lives out of state and that Furr’s ex-wife — who may have provided the video to the woman — lives outside Logan County.

Numerous attempts were made to contact both women in the course of the investigation.

But a screen shot of a text along with the 15-second video was texted to someone, however with the following message:

“u made me kill bear bear like u kill me iam not playen b iam ****** up over this atleast he aint sufferin like me over u.”

The text originated from a an account bearing the name Larry Furr.

“We have been inundated with phone calls and people sending nasty messages to my Facebook page,” said Hicks. “I had responded to many of those messages and returned many of the calls.”

Hicks said he received “vulgar, hateful and threatening” messages from the public prior to the arrest on Thursday.

“Any more will be ignored, we won’t respond and any future threats in the case could lead to prosecution,” Hicks said.
