Just two days after four dogs were rescued from a suspected hoarding situation near Dallas, Texas, they were dead, reported Tuesday's NBC DFW News.
The dogs, dubbed "Faith, Hope, Love and Grace," had been taken to the Dallas Animal Services facility on December 30. According to rescuers who had worked to help remove the dogs from the bad living situation, the four dogs were handed over to the facility with assurances from animal services staff that there would be a 10-day holding period.
On New Year's Day, just two days after intake, the four dogs were put down. The City of Dallas released a statement about the incident. According to the release, the dogs were entered into the system as "owner surrenders," and staff put them down because they noted poor health and behavior issues.
The release also noted possible failures which have led to an investigation:
On Monday, Jan. 5, community members said potential homes had been found for the dogs. DAS is now conducting a complete investigation to determine if system failures and/or performance issues may have contributed to the incident. Once the investigation is complete, we will share our findings and potential next steps.
In the release, the City of Dallas stated that staff is "devastated" that four dogs may have been "euthanized in error."
