Sherry Bernstein Am I reading this right? The same guy who broke the story on his facebok page adopted this beast?

This is horrible. Shows how pit bulls can't be left alone with other dogs.
The incident occurred at the animal shelter in Idabel, a small town in the state of Oklahoma. A shelter dog was filmed while...

  • Laurie Anne "Demand Profound Reform Now!" Such as? What is an already underfunded public shelter going to do? There is more to the story, no doubt, but the shelter had done a welfare check on the dogs just prior to this grisly sight being discovered. The pit bull was not starving and was not acting out of hunger. It killed and ate its kennel mate. The guy who publicized the story actually adopted "Hannibal the Cannapitbull," so he obviously doesn't blame the breed or deed. The thing that could have been done differently is 1) Not put pitbulls in with other dogs, to house them separately, or 2) Shelter fewer pit bulls/molossers, making room for normal dogs.

  • Jeffrey Sloan What concerns me is the monster at the shelter who condemned the poor dog to a horrible death by confining it with a pit bull. Obviously the need to make a propaganda statement, attempting to normalize the perception of pit bulls by putting them in cages with normal dogs was the only thing that concerned them. At the very least this is depraved indifference, and the responsible pit propaganda activist should be in jail on felony animal cruelty charges.

  • Heather Clemenceau From the Change.org petition - "Cecil Richards is the Animal Control Officer in Idabel, Ok. He is in charge of the pound there. This pound is a house of horrors. Dogs are dying in these kennels. Freezing to death. Starving to death. Dead bodies laying on the kennel floor for days. The other dogs are so hungry, they are forced to eat the dead dog carcasses to survive. The kennels are completely open to the elements. No heat in the winter, no air conditioning in the summer. Cecil Richards is scared of dogs. He will not even touch them. The dogs are used for target practice, being shot dead instead of humanely euthanized when the kennels are full. Cats are being caught in live traps and submerged in water, drowning inside those traps. This abuse and neglect has to stop. Local animal advocates have tried for years to put a stop to this torture, neglect and abuse. The local authorities will not allow anyone to volunteer at the pound to try to make the living conditions better for the dogs. They have yet to relinquish Cecil Richards of his Animal Control Officer position. Changes have to be made. The animals deserve better. Demand justice for all of the forgotten animals that have suffered and died at the hands of Cecil Richards. Sign the petition. Demand a CHANGE. Demand JUSTICE.
**WARNING** this video was taken at the Idabel pound 01/13/2015 and is very graphic. It shows a dog so hungry, he is eating another dog left DEAD at the Idabel poundm its hard to watch and see the despair of the situation. Please reach out and help, call your local news channels, call your politicians sign the petition forthcoming. There voices must be heard!!"

  • Laurie Anne The situation must be investigated, but this looks like a very underfunded shelter. Unless Cecil Richards has funds he is using on things other than what they are meant for, he may be doing the best he can in an impoverished, overpopulated shelter. The work of an animal shelter sucks. But in the absence of evidence of deliberate wrong doing, let the people who are calling for his head raise the money needed, and keep it coming year after year, season after season, to improve the conditions there. The main problem is unwanted pets. Let the guy take his camera and go expose some back yard breeders!

  • Laurie Anne I would want to know who the "local animal rights people" are, and what their agenda is. Everyone in this group is aware of informal rescues and people who might mean well who want to save every dog who end up with 60 pit bulls in their house in urine-soaked crates, and try to ship them out of state, etc, or the local ex-con who runs a pit bull rescue out of his apartment, where dogs "somehow get loose" and attack some kid in the neighborhood, etc. Just saying that based on what we have seen, to imply that "local animal rights people" can do a better job than the guy who runs the pound is a huge leap of imagination. Cecil Richards is afraid to handle dogs? Does it mean he is cautious about handling pits and other molossers, or that he faints at the sight of a yorkie? If there is crime, prosecute him, otherwise, they can stick this petition up their behinds, if they are not prepared to come up with the funding it takes to run a burdened dog shelter that has to take in everyone else's disasters.

  • Laurie Anne It is legal to euthanize with carbon monoxide. CO is cheap. Way cheaper than shooting, as ammo is very expensive! It would be wicked indeed if the claim of staff using shelter animals for target practice is true, but it would be pure sadism rather efficient spending to destroy unwanted animals. Drowning cats? • Brenda Foley I personally think it is a mole hill situation being blown out of proportion because I have seen things of this nature occur in the animal world. Some animals will consume animals that may have died of natural causes. I have also been called to scenes of death of an owner where the animals in the home fed on the deceased. It is in nature that we see this often. Consuming of the deceased is survival and to keep other predators away. I have seen this regardless of breed. Mother Cats do this on a regular basis If a Kitten perishes or is frail and weak.

We've had 150-200 lb Newfies, irish Wolfhounds, Great Pyrenees and other large breeds running around with no problems for decades, and generally speaking, they do not launch unprovoked attacks. But medium sized dogs, 40-65 lb pit bulls, are committing horrendous attacks every day. It's not that difficult a concept: genetics matter.

  • Jeffrey Sloan Well, it sounds like there's been a vast media conspiracy to cover up dachshund attacks, if the pit fans are to be believed.

  • M.j. Brandt Correct Jeffrey Sloan, I have owned G. Shepherds , Komondors, Maremmas, and Great Pyrs. Never had a bite, or mauling or death from any of them.

  • Jeffrey Sloan My baby Akita would playfully mouth my arm - but always watching my face carefully to make sure she wasn't being too rough. my chihuahua mixes bite me a lot - but it's all in play, they aren't trying to hurt me, and the skin doesn't get broken. Normal dogs practice something called bite inhibition.

  • Lorena McGovern I am not your friend Amber. Nutters like you are extremely irritating because of your irrational views. You're all like three-year-olds throwing tantrums. You're just a mole here but don't realize quite how transparent you are to us.

  • Lorena McGovern I will tell a story that has a happy ending because my dog is not a pit bull: one day out in the yard, my young daughter pestered my mutt dog, and the dog bit her on the hand. The skin was barely broken, and the dog was cowered in a corner beating her ...See More

  • Laurie Anne It is an aberration for a dog to harm a person or another dog. Only 'The New Normal" tells us it is perfectly natural. The New Normal is not based on science or history, but is a political ideology.
